The Gifs are faster loading and smoother running. The Java Applets allow for pauses in viewing and they display a smoother grey scale if you are operating in High (16bit) or True (32bit) color mode.

A fairly fast video card and a good deal of open memory are required for the smooth running of these movies. note: the brightness of features depicted in these images roughly scales with their elevation
