An STM movie showing the transition between the A and B configuration on the Si(001) surface at room temperature. Yamasaki has calculated the difference between these two configurations as only 0.08eV. A schematic of these and other dimer orientations may be viewed in the configuration gallery. These are empty state images, so the centers of the dimer rows appear dark.
