Abstract: We have imaged mechanically polished and fractured (111) surfaces of Terfenol-D using magnetic force microscopy (MFM), and also the fracture surface during application of in situ applied stresses. The theory of James and Kinderlehrer (1993) has been used to explain some of the observed domain structures. Although some imaged domain structures are not predicted, there is general agreement with the theory. Observations indicate applied stress results in domain wall motion between existing domains as well as nucleation of new domains. (15 References).
